  1. I enjoyed this interview very much!

I find this gives me great insight into your city and how you will progress.
Many say China is the next superpower. This may be very correct.

  2. Thanks for all of the comments from the readers.  Several people mentioned my Chinese, which is really far from fluent even after all of these years.  I just don't memorize enough characters – that is unfortunately what it is all about and why this language is so much harder than others. As for why I chose to study Chinese, my parents had little involvement and were hoping I would stick with Latin.  My story with Chinese begins with the video game version of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, one of China’s major historical novels. The video game inspired me to pick up the English translation, a lengthy tome indeed, which in turn piqued my interest in Chinese history.  When I arrived at High School – Philips Academy Andover – Chinese was available, so I chose it.  My interest in China had nothing to do with the economic development and business opportunities here, though everyone always assumes it did.

  6. Nels I so enjoyed your interview and am delighted to hear more about your personal story here.
It is so easy to become isolated when living in a foreign country, and sometimes we all question our motivations.
So at least hearing about other journey's makes that process at least entertaining, but most certainly reassuring.

Being able to share information truly brings us together in a very unique way.
I laughed out loud when I read that it was a video game that became your catalyst towards China.
No doubt about it – technology influences all of us.

Your parents must be very proud of you.

  7. Nels I love that a video game propelled your life to the other side of the planet! Goes to show, you never know where inspiration can come from – keeping an open mind and open heart is the only way to gain the most out of life.

SHIPING I just saw your message and am so touched by your offer to come with HAW to Tian Ai. What a wonderful idea about bringing another skill to them. Let me talk about this with the Director, so we can figure out how to make it a sustainable course for the children. This is my email address, can we exchange more about this? lc_wms@hotmail.com

During my years working with the disabled children, I have found so much love in this city and from this online community. Our own, Steve has donated his international band, THE SHARKS for our Children's Day event at Dinosaur Park. THANK YOU STEVE!

If you are interested in joining in our efforts, please let me know.

    Love,
    Professor L….XOXOXO

  8. You were really smart taking Chinese instead of Latin Nels!

Professor your HAW student left a wonderful message describing your work at Tian Ai.
I really applaud your efforts. It helps prove even as foreigners here, we contribute to society.
I would like to come with you, will send you an email, ok?

  9. Nels I got a kick out of the thing that pushed you to China!

Some of us might remember not so long ago a group of foreign business men were recognized by the city for their contribution to the city – which happened to be in the form of MONEY.

Contributions are made to this city beyond just money – and it can be seen by the volunteer efforts of Professor L's group and folks like Steve and Shiping who support them also.

  10. I much admire you Nels.

Chinese characters must be very had to learn. They look like little pictures to me. I never could learn.
Your Chinese speaking is very good.

  11. OMG! Learn Chinese or Latin???

I would just want to kill myself – I so totally laughed at how you made your decision.

    Gotta love video games.
